JOHN COBURN GALLERY

The main gallery space is named after world renowned Ingham local artist John Coburn.

"John, known as Jack to friends and family, always said that much of his art was inspired by his childhood in tropical North Queensland. Later, although he lived in Sydney, he often went north for holidays, to relatives at Braemeadows, Taylors Beach, Halifax, Mona, and Mount Cordelia."

"While so many celebrated Australian painters of the 20th century have been figurative artists - painters of the human form - Coburn was an abstract artist. It is perhaps his greatest achievement to have reached large audiences with a form of abstract painting based on simple clear shapes and radiant colour. Most of his pictures have a joyous quality, and that may be why they exert such broad appeal."

“His work will always be recognised as an art of affirmation, by turns cosmic and intimate. It is a rare distinction for an artist to have cast off the gloom and the angst of the modern era, and to come out on the side of the angels.”
